A Day With Ney

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

About a week ago, my friend and I were driving in Austin and noticed a castle-like tower in the distance of the neighborhood we were driving through. Always down for exploring, we decided to drive toward the tower to discover what it was. Turns out it was a museum for Elisabet Ney, a German sculptor. We missed the time the museum was open, but we decided to explore it outside anyways. There is a beautiful bridge and stone structure, with a creek as well.

There wasn't enough time for a shoot so I resolved to come another day. That day came this past Sunday and I, along with two friends, Annie and Olivia, explored Ney's backyard. They were down for any pictures I imagined, which including getting into the freezing creek. We came during museum hours and got to check out Elisabet's sculptures and her studio. It is on 44th Street if you are ever in the area and want to check it out!

Below are some photographs of her work and the second floor of her studio.

Unexpected Sights

I've gone to Mount Bonnell several times over the past year I've been in Austin, but what I didn't know was that there was a park just a short ways away with roaming peacocks. That's right. Instead of turning right on Mount Bonnell Road, make a left to Mayfield Park.

My friend Chanel came down for my birthday awhile ago and we decided to check out Mayfield Park because we found out that peacocks roam around freely. It is a must see, and these birds are stunning! It's incredible how close you can get to them and how well preserved the park is for these birds to simply walk around. The pictures show just how beautiful the colors and feathers of these peacocks are, no editing necessary. Right before we were about to leave, a peacock finally opened its feathers completely and I got the shot I was hoping for!

Along with the peacocks in the park is a small cottage and gardens with a pond. Walking around was relaxing and the pictures came out great. Next time you find yourself going to Mount Bonnell, make that left turn instead!

Taking On the Greenbelt

Monday, July 8, 2013

Being in such a wonderful city really makes me always want to do something fun and adventurous. So, naturally, waking up at 6:30 in the morning with a few friends and driving to the Greenbelt for pictures and some early morning hiking was the adventure I had in mind.

Going to the Greenbelt has been on my Austin bucket list for awhile now, specifically Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls. We finally found the right place to park...and began our hike. The scenery was beautiful, the weather wasn't hot (..yet), and the company was enjoyable! As we continued walking until we saw something that looked like an image I found on Google, we came across a large tree in a clearing. Just an ordinary large tree, that happened to have a ladder made out of tree branches on the side of it. How cool, right? Obviously we planned on climbing up the ladder, and so we did. So many pictures!

We continued on the trail, asking people along the way if we were "getting closer," or if they "knew where Sculpture Falls was." One response was, "around 6.25" and the man continued on jogging. 6.25. That could be 6.25 miles, 6.25 minutes... You get the point. Little did we figure out until a little hike down the path, is that we were at 5.75, only .50 away from our destination. A light of hope entered our minds and we continued on, embracing the scenery around us.

Once we finally arrived, it was gorgeous. The water level was low (and much lower than the Google image showed) but despite that, the scenery made the long hike in a new pair of Chacos worth it. Seriously, if you have the chance to walk a bit (roughly 2 miles over some terrain) then go for it. You will not be disappointed! Of course I'm biased because I absolutely fell in love and took so many pictures... to the point that my friend Jeffrey had to let me borrow a back up memory card because I forgot mine! This hike was meant for photoshoot purposes but I definitely plan to be back for a nice hike or swim (once the water is higher of course).

Enjoy the pictures and special thanks to Jeffrey, Jon, and Mallory who took pictures of me! I love how they turned out!

New Finds in Old Places

Saturday, May 4, 2013

Yesterday I took pictures for another grad, Chelsea. She was a delight to photograph and we had a blast exploring Austin for great locations. We started out on campus and ended up finding new locations besides the usual Littlefield Fountain and Tower. We also went to Town Lake and the Austin postcard. Below are how a few of the pictures turned out.

Meet Hanna

Monday, April 15, 2013

Hanna picked my Secret Santa gift back in December, which was a photoshoot free of charge and we finally found a day that worked for the both of us. I'm so happy I got a chance to take pictures of her! We chose a little hidden location on campus (yes, on campus) and had a great session. The pictures have a more natural tone to them, which fits Hanna and the scenery. Check out the pictures below and check out her singing on Youtube, just search Hanna Franklin. She's amazing!

Day Adventures

Thursday, December 6, 2012

Finally made plans to go to Mt. Bonnell--the highest point in Austin, TX. I have been planning on going there ever since I came to Austin but never went through with any plans. Last Saturday morning, I finally went and loved it. It was December 1st and 80 degrees. I didn't expect anything less from Texas weather. My mentor group and I went exploring around and down little trails, it was so beautiful. I decided to experiment a little with the manual settings on my camera and photographing the scenery since I have not been behind a camera in awhile.

We also went to a hidden place called Castle Hill. There is graffiti everywhere. Every time you look at the graffiti, you find something you have not seen before. Real life I Spy. It's on Baylor Street and pretty hard to miss. There is actually a castle at the top of the hill, above the graffiti.

Austin's Nature and Science Center is pictured above. Lovely weather and an even better sight.

Here are a few more pictures from Mt. Bonnell. Enjoy!
